It’s Time To Trade Your Skinnies For Flares

Why we love – and how to rock – this ’70s staple

Remember when we ditched our bell-bottoms for the exceedingly easy-to-wear skinny jeans in the ’90s? Yeah, now do the complete opposite.

Our skinnies have been an essential in our wardrobes for over a decade — they're versatile enough to pair with just about any top, shoe and jacket and oh-so comfortable we welcome an excuse to wear them for every occasion. As as result, they've also become, dare we say it, a little boring.

Enter the flared jean. Popularly known as the poster pant for the hippie movement in the ’70s, the jeans have been spotted on bloggers, models and tastemakers alike this season. Spring/Summer’s Louis Vuitton and Gucci collection were also dominated by them, and it’s not hard to see why. Instead of blending in (like our skinnies did), these stand out without being too over the top. Funny for a pant that has its humble origins as part of the US Navy uniform.

Flares may seem tricky to wear at first, but the right pair can instantly elongate legs. The perfect cut will hug you from the waist down, then flare out gradually from the knees. Add a pair of chunky heels and you’ll be ready to conquer the world.
