Singaporean womenswear label In Good Company opened its first retail store at Ion today.

I’ve been a cheerleader of the brand since its debut – ELLE was one of the first few magazines to do an interview with head designer Sven Tan, star of the now-defunct label AllDressedUp. After his departure from that brand in 2012, he set up IGC the following year together with three friends (slash ex-colleagues) to offer wearable yet uniquely tailored clothes for both women and girls, occasionally designed in collaboration with creative partners like illustrators and perfumers.

It was brilliant. There was nothing like it in our market. The price points and tailoring made the independent label accessible without being fast fashion, yet it was luxe enough for the children’s line to be picked up by Kids 21, the children’s arm of fashion powerhouse Club 21.

What stuck with me then was what Jaclyn Teo, one of the co-founders, had told me: That practicality in their clothes was essential. They wanted each piece to be machine-washable, and they tested the products out on themselves. I bought two dresses immediately and have been a customer since.

It’s clear others feel the same way: Today, IGC opens its first shop in exclusive Ion Orchard, a roomy 3,300 square foot space in the mall’s Basement 1. And while the label is no stranger to having its collections sold in a physical space (it’s been carried in stores such as Front Row and Tangs), this boutique will offer a completely different experience.

Alongside the clothes, you’ll find an IGC café – a collaboration with local bakeshop Plain Vanilla featuring their famous cupcakes and a delicious array of breakfast options and desserts – plus magazines curated by indie distributor Magpie and bags by Hong Kong brand Hoiming, amongst other goodies.

Guess you can tell where I’ll be this weekend, nibbling on a cupcake and shopping up a storm. See you?
