The humble cover-up is having a moment. Designers are going for the throat: The frock-over-turtleneck idea has been embraced with gusto this Fall as Thakoon and Jill Stuart paired ribbed knits over floral summer dresses. At Sonia Rykiel, a cashmere cover-up was foil to a metallic snakeskin dress. Consuelo Castiglioni’s Marni collection was an essay on how versatile the turtleneck can be, and paired high-necked dickies with different necklines from boatnecks to crewnecks.

The result is a sophisticated (think Audrey Hepburn!), ultra-modern and graphic effect that’s easy to replicate — especially if you already have a turtleneck tucked away in your closet right now.

But it’s the turtleneck choker that’s the real game-changer here. It’s basically a band of ribbed fabric wrapped around the neck to show off a bare décolletage, and this is a chic warm-weather option and a brilliant way to update any outfit. Even cuter: If long locks are loosely tucked in and spill out from under.
