With her name immortalised by one of the most luxurious, sought-after bags of our time; and countless photographs of her impeccable style (wispy bangs, bell-bottoms, wicker baskets) still inspiring runway and beauty trends today, Jane Birkin is arguably fashion’s favourite muse.
Today, Saint Laurent released black-and-white images of Birkin wearing the French fashion house’s iconic Le Smoking jacket. Designed by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966, the tux was considered a revolutionary design as it was controversial at the time for women to wear trousers in public.
The photographs, taken by Hedi Slimane, are part of his ongoing Music Project. Past subjects include other icons such as Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson and Joni Mitchell. Birkin’s participation also marks the first time she has modelled for a high fashion brand.
We hope to see more of their collaborative projects in the future, as the two are obviously fans of each other – Birkin has been dressed by the house numerous times, and was spotted front row at the label’s recent Fall Winter 2016 show.
