Did you know: When travel started taking off in Europe in the 19th century, dignitaries began requesting greater personalisation of their luggage (heaven forbid their luxury trunks get mixed up with a commoner’s!). This birthed marquage, the service of hand-creating distinguishing marks on travel trunks via badges and initials in different colours.
One of the best-known and earliest brands to provide this service was Goyard. The luxury trunk-maker was – and remains – adept at bringing out the personality of both the owner and the trunk. (Fun fact: Different cultures historically had different preferences. According to Goyard, the French liked using their initials while the Brits preferred to spell out their full surname.)
Now, as a nod to our Jubilee year, the house is offering a new Singapore-inspired marquage design for those who want to customise their bags. The design, which depicts the face of a lion and is exclusive to the Little Red Dot, will be available only from tomorrow till 6 December in three sizes and a selection of vibrant colours.
Sadly, no photos of it have been released. But hey, that just makes you all the more curious to see it, right? And you can – on 6, 7, 13, 20, 27 November and 4 December, when a “live” marquage demo will be held at the Goyard boutique at Takashimaya S.C.
Head down to watch the Goyard artisan hand-draw a range of designs and initials using exclusive paints made with natural pigments. Or book a consultation with the marquage specialist to dress up your own bag.
Whether you choose the lion design or not, the result is sure to be roar-some.
The Goyard boutique is at #01-11 Takashimaya Shopping Centre, 391 Orchard Road. To book an appointment, call 62350685.
