Jewels that alert you to incoming calls

Thinking of getting a Ringly but rings not quite your thing? Altruis’ smart jewels offer a similar technology but are available also as bracelets and necklaces. The jewels are made of ceramic zirconia and are embedded with tiny circuit boards that connect to your iPhone via the Kovert app. These “gems” vibrate whenever there’s activity on your mobile, and you can use the app to filter out calls that you don’t want to be alerted to.

Bellabeat’s Leaf pendant is as perceptive as it is pretty. This beautifully designed health tracker monitors your daily activity, sleep quality, stress levels and menstrual cycle. On top of that, it helps you improve specific aspects of your daily routine so you can feel your best - and of course, it’s particularly useful for those who are trying to get pregnant.

MICA, or My Intelligent Communication Accessory, is every girl’s new best friend. Designed by Opening Ceremony and powered by Intel, it delivers discreet text messages, Gmail VIP notifications, Facebook calendar alerts, Refinery29 horoscopes, and even a “Time to Go” feature that sends smart appointment reminders based on location. All this via a 1.6-inch sapphire touchscreen, set in snakeskin with an 18K gold finish and adorned with pearls, lapis, obsidian, and tiger’s eye.

A bracelet that adjusts your body temperature

The soon-to-launch Wristify bracelet was developed by four MIT students to help adjust the body’s internal thermostat by producing comforting/refreshing heating or cooling sensations on the wrist. Kinda like dipping your toes in cold water on a sunny day at the beach, or placing a warm washcloth on your forehead on a cold evening. What’s more, it looks so much like a sculptural Georg Jensen or Frank Gehry for Tiffany & Co jewellery piece.

Not exactly jewellery but still highly wearable is the Stelle Audio mini-clutch, a purse-cum-speaker that could probably also function as a disco ball if you pointed some lights in its direction. It’s the perfect party accessory for girls who like their audio loud and on the go. The Stelle Audio even has a speakerphone for calls — clever, but, uh, talking to our bags is where we draw the line.

We love it when designers work gadgetry into jewellery, especially when the results are so gorgeous that we can’t tell there’s a bunch of computer chips and circuits built in. Here are the top five pieces you’ll want on your wish list, which prove that function and style can be combined - and in spectacular fashion!
