This One Amazing Trick Will Keep Your Lashes Curled All Day

You don’t even need a base

We’ve often noticed makeup guru Larry Yeo waving his mascara wand in the air before using it, so we just had to ask - “what exactly are you doing?”

Turns out it’s part of a personal trick of his to keep his models' lashes tightly curled for hours - read on to find out how you can do it too!

The technique

Step 1

Start by curling your lashes with a good eyelash curler - that’s half the job done. I recommend the Jill Stuart Beauty Eyelash Curler that you can get from Hong Kong or Japan. Its curvature is great for giving lashes a natural-looking curl. (Or try ELLE's favourites from Shu Uemura or M.A.C.)

Step 2

Take the mascara wand straight out of the tube and dab it on some clean tissue. This removes any excess formula. If you feel like you’re wasting it - don’t, because you’re supposed to throw out your mascara every three to six months anyway.

Step 3

Now this is the important thing: Fan the mascara wand in the air for three to five seconds, depending on how new your mascara is. (The newer it is, the longer you should wave it around.) This is because mascara that’s drier in texture holds a curl better. While applying wetter mascara straight onto your lashes will hydrate them, it will also straighten them out and cause them to go flat fast.

Step 4

Apply your mascara in a zig-zag motion from the roots to the ends and leave it to dry. Once that sets, your curls will stay and you can apply another coat of mascara.
