When it comes to skincare, less might be more if your skin is sensitive — the kind that turns red, feels tight, stings and itches. What causes it? “Some have naturally sensitive skin, others develop it temporarily during periods of stress,” says Chanel’s consulting dermatologist Amy Wechsler. “Pollution, smoking and sun exposure also create sensitivity.”
Finding skincare that works for such reactive skin is a guessing game. On the one hand, skin should be well moisturised as it needs the right amount of moisture for its barrier function to work properly. Yet, harsh ingredients and artificial fragrances in products might cause a reaction. But that doesn’t mean you have to stick to a soap-and-water regimen.
Chanel’s latest breakthrough, La Solution 10 de Chanel, $125, is the house’s first skincare product for sensitive skin. Ultra-basic with no added fragrance, colourants or unnecessary fillers, this skin-soothing moisturiser contains just 10 ingredients — most moisturisers typically boast 25 to 50. The fewer the ingredients, the lower the chance of a negative reaction. And while it might seem easier to whip up a formula with a condensed ingredients list, it’s quite the opposite. Chanel took four years and 117 trials to develop this ultra-lightweight hydrator that provides ultra-intense protection.
The key ingredient in the silky and quick-absorbing cream is silver needle tea. Harvested by hand in China, this rare variety of white tea is said to contain twice as many antioxidant polyphenols as green tea, and is also said to help reduce sensitivity in skin. And with glycerine and shea butter to hydrate and protect, it’s as pure and gentle as a moisturiser gets.
