The K-Beauty Face To Know

Model Hwang Se-On shares her skincare routine (it’s not 10 steps) and Seoul must-dos

Hwang Se-On has 96.1k followers (and counting) on her Instagram account. The model, who recently turned 21, grew up in New Zealand and walked numerous shows at New Zealand Fashion Week before returning to her home country, South Korea. These days, she’s a familiar face on the covers of glossies and is modelling for one of South Korea’s most recognised beauty brands, Laneige.

“I used to have really good skin back in the day. But since I started modelling, my skin got kind of bad – there were shoots where I had to change my makeup look four times a day. When I travel for work or have to work long hours, my skin gets rough and dry.

“I have combination skin with an oily T-zone but after using products from the Laneige Water Bank range, my skin has gotten better. After I remove my makeup, I cleanse, put on toner, essence, eye cream, cream and the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask. I love using the mask – I wake up in the mornings and my skin feels refreshed, revitalised and full of moisture, even if it was dull and dehydrated the day before.

“When I’m not working, I’m all for the natural makeup look. I also like light colour on my lips - usually red or pink. One of my favourite lippy shades is the Laneige Two Tone Lip Bar in Daring Darling. I also have a lot of perfume. I change what fragrance I wear daily depending on my mood and wear it behind my ears or on my pulse points.

“After a long day I like to unwind by meeting my friends. We just go to cafés and catch up. Sometimes, we go to the jjimjibang (Korean sauna) if we have the time. When I’m alone, I like to just sit in bed with my laptop and watch a movie while eating a sandwich.

“When in Seoul, I’m always in Gangnam – I stay near there and my agency is there as well. It’s hard to pick a favourite place to eat at because there are so many good restaurants. But if I had to choose a type of food, it would be Korean barbeque. Plus it’s not hard to find.

“One of my favourite areas to shop in Seoul is Garosugil-gil. The street houses many trendy Korean designer brands. I have so many favourite Korean designers but if I had to name a few, it would be Low Classic and SJYP. Low Classic has a very Chloe and Celine feel, and SJYP is a funky brand with a Marc Jacobs vibe. My personal style is casual and my style icon is Kate Moss.”
