Hollywood Is Obsessed With This Beauty Product

Best part? It won’t cost you an arm and a leg

What do celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Miranda Kerr, Suki Waterhouse, Blake Lively and Emma Stone have in common? In recent years, they’ve all become fans of using coconut oil, be it smoothing it on the hair for shiny tresses, slathering it on the face to nourish the skin, or downing spoonfuls of it for an extra health boost.

But what exactly makes coconut oil so great? According to studies, this superfood is rich in medium-chain fatty acids, which can stimulate your metabolism to help with weight loss. It also contains capric and caprylic acid to give you energy and nourishment, and lauric acid which is rich in antioxidants to protect from free-radical damage.

Wanna give this celebrity beauty and wellness secret a try? Here’s what you can use it for:

As a hair mask

After rinsing off your shampoo, massage a 20- to 50-cent-sized dollop of coconut oil onto wet hair, starting only from the mid-section to the ends as too much can weigh the hair down. Leave for half an hour, then rinse. Makes hair instantly smoother, softer and shinier.

As a body oil

Warm some coconut oil in the palms of your hands, then massage all over to moisturise and nourish the skin. This is great as a daily body balm if you’ve got dry skin. Or bring your jar of coconut oil along when you go for a massage and get your therapist to use it as a massage oil alternative. It not only leaves skin smooth and supple, but helps nourish it too.

As a body scrub

Add some sea salt or sugar crystals to your coconut oil to create a homemade scrub. Then gently slough off dead skin on the body or feet for baby smooth skin.

As a lip balm

Dab a little coconut oil onto dry, chapped lips to instantly soothe them. For an on-the-go lip balm, scoop out a bit into a small container and slip it into your makeup bag.

As a makeup remover

Warm a dollop of coconut oil in the palms of your hands, then massage it over your face to dissolve your makeup. Remove with a damp washcloth, then rinse with warm water.

Nakula Coconut Oil

This Aussie-branded, 100 per cent USDA-certified organic virgin coconut oil is brought to you by the folks behind Just Picked CocoWater. It’s cold-pressed from fresh Sri Lankan coconut flesh so all its healthful benefits are retained, and has a pleasantly nutty and fragrant flavour. Even better: This is one of the most competitively priced premium coconut oils on the market, and a portion of sales gets donated to the Planet Water Foundation to provide clean water across Asia. From $15.95 for a 500ml jar at Jasons and Cold Storage supermarkets, and via www.coldstorage.com.sg.

Vita Coco Coconut Oil

Vita Coco comes to you from a couple of New Yorkers who discovered the magic of coconut everything on a trip to Brazil (never mind that they were actually there for the hot chicks). Like Nakula, it’s also USDA-certified, 100 per cent raw and cold-pressed. $20 for a 250ml jar, at major supermarkets and speciality stores.
