5 Sure-Fire Tricks To Reduce Puffy Eyes

Depuff in under five minutes

Plagued by puffy eyes? The list of culprits are endless. You might have partied all night, watched P.S. I Love You (cue the total cry fest), or eaten a meal that was high in salt. But thankfully, there are just as many ways to depuff.

#1 Load up on water

If you’ve woken up with puffy eyes, start by drinking plenty of water. Consuming salty food and alcohol the night before can cause swelling around the eye area. By downing H2O, you’ll rehydrate and flush out the high concentration of salt in the area around the eyes.

#2 Cool down

Did you know that washing your face with hot water and exposing it to steam can worsen puffiness? Instead, rinse it with cold water.  For a cooler experience, pop two clean spoons into the freezer and press them against your eyes for a few minutes.

#3 Soothe with green teabags or cucumber slices

Steep two green teabags in hot water for three minutes, squeeze out the excess water, and let them cool (or put them into the fridge). When they’re cold enough, place the refreshing treats over closed eyes for five minutes. The high-in-antioxidant teabags will help to reduce redness and soothe inflammation.

Applying cucumber slices while you lie back in bed may sound cliché too, but it works. Cucumbers have astringent properties that reduce puffiness by constricting blood vessels to prevent liquid from pooling around the eye area. Or try the Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber De-Tox De-Puffing Eye-Cubes that are packed for easy use.

#4 Apply eye products containing caffeine

The first thing I reach for when I wake up with puffy eyes is actually a men’s grooming product – Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Eye De-puffer. The heavyweight balm in a stick contains caffeine to refresh and depuff all in a swipe. Or try Origins’ GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream and Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller that also contain caffeine to deflate under eye bags.

#5 Use a lightweight eye product

If you’ve stayed up too late the night before, the last thing you want is to reach for a heavy-duty eye cream. Doing so can lead to increased water build-up around the eye area, which can cause more swelling. When in need, use a serum or a lightweight cream.
