5 Hair Mistakes That Make You Look Older

Seriously: When was the last time you had a good haircut?

You may be able to spot a bad hairstyle a mile off, but have you taken a closer look at your own ’do? Your bad hair could potentially age you and you wouldn’t even know it. Director of Cinq salon in Scotts Square, Henri Leong, lists the five most common hair mistakes that could add years to your face.

Mistake #1: Letting it grow out too long

We all have that girlfriend who cuts her hair once every three months (if she remembers). Most Singapore girls opt for what they think are easy, fuss-free styles that need minimal upkeep ─ including getting it cut regularly.

Heads up: “A good haircut should grow out nicely, but you should also get it cut every four to six weeks to keep it in shape,” says Leong. Otherwise it’s just going to drag down your face.

Keeping the ends of your hair fresh will always make you look younger and more polished: Do a deep-conditioning treatment once a month, either in-salon or at home. “It’s like going to the gym. You need to do it regularly.”

Mistake #2: You’re not drying your hair properly in the morning

How many times have you seen women all dressed up and heading to work on the MRT… with wet hair? “It’s just pure laziness,” declares Leong. Inevitably, hair will dry out into a frizzball by the time you reach the office, especially if you have curly or wavy hair.

“Opt for a wash-and-wear style if you’re pressed for time or not good with a hairdryer,” says Leong. “Gently towel-dry as much as you can before you leave your home. If you’re prone to frizz, apply a hair serum sparingly to almost-dry hair. And always, always condition your hair: All great hairstyles start with good hair.”

Mistake #3: You chose the wrong hair colour

Asians just can’t stop colouring our hair. A general rule of thumb: Nothing too extreme unless you’re a K-pop star like singer CL: Blonde will usually wash out Asian skin tones.

And if you think dying your dark tresses with a red cast is ageing ─ evoking visions of your friendly neighbourhood beer aunties ─ think again. “Actually, any colour can turn rusty,” says Leong. “But any colour can also make you look gorgeous! Check with your colour technician and most of all, take into account your lifestyle. If you swim regularly or are in the sun a lot, you should reconsider that dye job. It just won’t last as long.”

Mistake #4: You tried to recreate your in-salon look

Believe it or not, it’s not about the styling, but the hairstyle itself. “Once you get a good haircut, it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to style your hair,” says Leong. “Ask your stylist, who’ll be happy to share any tips.”

And practise, practise, practise. “You touch your hair more often than your hairstylist. You shouldn’t have any problems if your haircut is good.”

Mistake #5: Your hair colour is faded and/or your ends are fried

Faded colour is the result of not just a bad colour job, but also a bad colour choice. And overdoing chemical treatments will fry most hair — even coarser, sturdier Asian hair.  Try a gloss every other visit, and if your natural root colour growth is more than 1 inch, it’s time to colour your hair again. Says Leong: “Always check with your stylist. He/she knows the condition of your hair and your lifestyle better than you do. You’d be surprised!”
