3 Foolproof Ways To Save Your Stained Nails

And they don’t involve bleaching or expensive treatments

Recently, I painted my nails red without using a base coat (rookie mistake, I know). Of course, after removing the nail polish, I had to suffer the consequences of having stained, yellowish nails for the week after.

If you’re dealing with the same problem – luck is on our side! I've tried out some home remedies that promise to remove nail stains and here are the ones that actually worked:

1. Use a whitening toothpaste

This remedy supposedly works best immediately after you’ve removed your nail polish. Upon realising my nails were stained after taking off the red polish, I scrubbed some whitening toothpaste on my nails, using an old toothbrush. This helped to fade some of the stains, but you should try out the following steps to remove them completely.

2. Rub lemon juice onto your nails

While there are some remedies that encourage you to soak your nails in lemon juice directly, I feel that its acidity may be too harsh on hands. So I chose to rub it onto my nails instead.

Slice a fresh lemon into half, and work the juice into your nails for 30 to 60 seconds per nail. Or use a cotton ball and soak it in lemon juice before rubbing it on each nail thoroughly. Let your digits sit for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse them in water. Repeat every day until you’re happy with how far the stains have faded.

3. Gently buff your nails with lemon tea tree oil

The yellow stains that remain after you remove nail polish are found on the top layer of your nails, and buffing will help to remove some of them. Make sure you do it gently, because excessive buffing weakens the nail beds and can end up becoming even more damaging for your nails.

Apply some lemon tea tree oil to your nails – lemon has bleaching properties, while tea tree has anti-fungal benefits – before lightly buffing them.

Note: The stained nails I’m referring to in this article are a result of nail polish and are purely aesthetic – if your nails are yellowing naturally, it could mean a serious problem with your kidneys, lungs or thyroid, so consult a doctor immediately!
