If You Love Challenging Yourself, Do This

It’s the ultimate training for mind, body AND spirit

While some of us were staggering home from partying in the wee hours of 15 November, a battalion of fitness enthusiasts had gathered at Nicoll Highway for an activity far more gruelling than trying to flag a cab while drunk.

The occasion? The very first Reebok Spartan Race Singapore, jointly organised by the athletic wear brand and MediaCorp.

Not so much a race as it is an obstacle course where your biggest challenger is you (finishers get a modest medal and a tee), the 7km route wove in 24 survival challenges designed to brutally test the mind, body and spirit.

Apart from running, Spartans had to scramble up ropes, crawl under barbed wire, scale high walls, trod through mud and even leap over burning pits of fire.

And boy did this primal test bring out the best in everyone.

The participants included a group of Singaporean fitness enthusiasts known as the Yellow Fellows, who are committed to participating in at least 10 running events a year. They donate all the funds raised through these events to the Singapore Cancer Society.

Also in the Race was Singapore’s Blade Runner, Shariff Abdullah, who killed the course on his prosthetic blade and proved that with training, determination and perseverance, anyone can overcome any obstacle.

Of course, ELLE’s own staffers (hello, Shiqi and Joey!) were right there in the pack with other inspiring women, who tackled the daunting course with gutsy tenacity.

Can’t wait for the next Spartan Race? Look out for the Reebok Spartan Race Super and Spartan Juniors (yep, one for tough kiddos!) on 7 May 2016! Registration opens on 6 December. For more info, head to the Spartan Race Singapore Facebook page.
