In darkness there can be light, in misery there can be beauty, in death there can be life. So in an age where selfies are ubiquitous and cat videos emerge triumphant, there can be poetry.
(I.e. poetry is not dead and there is hope for the 21st century, after all.)
Because as it turns out, Instagram is where many have been going for a quick poetry fix. Gone are the days of ridiculously lugging around the hefty Complete Works of Shakespeare volume 2 (guilty) that you’ve stuffed in your maxi clutch (also guilty). In its place, this mod way of consuming poetry, a sort of Starbucks stop for your soul.
And just for you, we’ve put together a little starter pack of Insta-poetry with this roundup of 4 of our favourite writers who have taken the Instagram and poetry world by storm. So, go on, what are you waiting for? Get lost in words.
1. Rupi Kaur
Is a contemporary Canadian feminist poet and writer. She originally started out by sharing her poems on Tumblr and Instagram, and is now the author of Milk and Honey. Her poems deal with heartache, healing and most importantly – what it means to be a woman.
2. Lang Leav
Is an international best-selling author of Love & Misadventure, Lullabies and Memories. She is also the recipient of the Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Poetry. To put it simply, she writes feelings many of us often cannot put into words.
A brilliant poet who also happens to be Lang’s boyfriend. His number 1 best seller, Dirty Pretty Things, is exactly what you'd expect from the title. He makes reading feel a lot like falling in love. On the first page of his book: “Pretext - for Lang, I write because you exist”.
There’s not much to say about this private persona. Because, well, no one knows anything about him besides the fact that he has over 250K followers and whisks you away with these short poignant lines just to sign off – Atticus. You’ll be wanting more every time.
