First things first: It’s not like we think us girls have to get a guy’s approval to feel good about ourselves (nosirree – that’s what cocktails are for). But when the man in question is Matthew Williamson, one of Britain’s most talented womenswear designers and the person who once said that his design philosophy “is to make women feel like peacocks”, you’ve got to be curious about his style tips.
Ahead, we find out what he thinks women should wear to look stylish when on holiday, plus his travel suggestions – Williamson, after all, says that he gets much of his inspiration from travel.
1. Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in the unexpected when travelling. It's not necessarily the typical sunset or white sand beach but unique finds in markets or color combinations in architecture. I am always on the lookout.
2. What are your favourite travel destinations?
The Kerala backwaters in southern India for their naturalistic aesthetic, as well as the seemingly idyllic, back-to-basics way of life. I also love Deia, a small coastal village in the north of Mallorca for similar reasons; it's charming, simple and relatively underdeveloped.
3. Do you have any vacations planned coming up?
My next trips away include Tokyo and Sydney. Both are for work to launch my new line of furniture but I'll no doubt tag on a few days’ break while there. I've never been to Australia so I'm excited to see it.
4. What destinations are on your vacation bucket list?
I'd love to go to Vancouver. I also had a brilliant time in Portland, Oregon this year, so I'd love to return there one day!
5. What essentials does every girl need on holiday?
Plenty of printed bikinis and cover-ups to go from beach to bar. A wide-brimmed hat always looks fabulous on the beach too.
6. What’s your favorite summer look for women?
Vivid color and an unexpected juxtaposition of print - it’s a look that runs through all of my collections. I always find that holidays let you step outside your usual style and be more adventurous.
7. What are your personal packing essentials for vacation?
I always travel with my phone and charger, a big pencil case full of pens and pencils and a sketchbook. Tons of T-shirts, sunblock and a straw hat usually do the trick!
