The Coat You Need For That Winter Holiday

Origin? An army uniform. And no. It doesn’t have a camouflage print

Based on the military uniform of the US Navy, this double-breasted pea coat in a dark blue hue is as classic as a leather motorcycle jacket or a black blazer. (Fashion trivia: The other popular fashion item based on a navy uniform is the marinière — or the Breton striped top — taken from the French.)

Also known as a reefer jacket, its seafaring iterations on the runway this Fall/Winter showed how versatile the cover-up can be. A floor-sweeping pea coat opened the show at Chloé, paired with a silk blouse and the brand’s ubiquitous long black scarf, while at Saint Laurent it got punked up with leather pants.

At Nina Ricci, the coat was cut wider and paired with a barely-there lace skirt - a look that’s wonderfully easy to replicate yourself. Meanwhile, Michael Kors put the piece on a pedestal — with brass-buttoned midi-skirts, embellished sleeves and our favourite look: A classic reefer coat over a brocade tunic and wide pants bunched up at the bottom for a tomboy evening look that feels completely of-the-moment.
