We should’ve seen this one coming: Most shower loofahs are really, really unhygienic. Though they look cute (nylon clouds, anyone?) and are a handy tool for quick exfoliation in the shower, the scrubbers have been exposed as a prime location for hosting and transmitting nasty bacteria.
Instead of getting you clean, they’re in fact doing the opposite. When you scrub your skin with the loofah, dead skin cells are trapped in the netting – which means you’re spreading the dirt collected from previous use around, every time you use the loofah.
As they’re usually stored in the shower – which is a warm and moist environment – these natural sponges and even their plastic counterparts become breeding grounds for bacteria, and mold and yeast growth.
Worst case scenario? You could get a staph infection from spreading the bacteria on your body, especially over wounds, scabs or shaving nicks, according to dermatologist Dr. Jessica Krant.
