5 Ways To Get Rid Of Split Ends WITHOUT A Haircut

Yes, it’s entirely possible

Ahhh, that golden period of split-end-free hair after you’ve just gone for a trim is heavenly. Too bad it doesn’t last forever (cry).

Split ends occur when the protective outer layer of the hair cuticle gets worn away due to external stressors like heat styling and chemical treatments. This exposes the internal structure of the hair, and makes it weak, dry and damaged, causing split ends.

No matter how well you condition your hair, split ends are an inevitable part of life. For those who are growing out their hair and would like to avoid trimming the ends as much as possible – good news – there are some ways where you can make them less noticeable between haircuts. Here’s how you can do it!

Use a wide-tooth comb

After applying conditioner in the shower, slowly run a wide-tooth comb through your hair. This helps to prevent the breakage that may occur when you try to brush hair that’s towelled-dry after showering.

Make sure you blow-dry correctly

If you can’t wait for your hair to be completely air-dried, try to wait till it’s 90 percent dry before picking up the hair dryer. Always use a nozzle on your dryer so you have control over the flow air, and dry hair in a downward direction before sectioning it and using a round brush to finish drying hair completely.

Conditioners are your best friend

Condition, condition, condition – invest in the right products for your hair. If you blow-dry your hair a lot, use a lotion with thermal protection properties, like the Kérastase Discipline Keratin Thermique. Or power up with a leave-in conditioner, like Living Proof No-Frizz Leave-In Conditioner from Sephora, which adds extra protection on your strands throughout the day.

Limit hair-damaging treatments

Hair services like colouring, highlights, straightening and perms are all causes of split ends. If you have to go for one, try to refrain from washing your hair for at least 48 hours as it’s at its most porous and vulnerable state – and more prone to breakage and splitting.

Apply a fortnightly natural coconut oil mask

Don’t give your locks a chance to dry out, snap and fray – do a coconut oil hair treatment once every two weeks. Simply take a scoop of coconut oil and work it through shampooed and towel-dried hair, starting from the roots to the ends. Wrap the conditioned hair in a towel or shower cap, and wait half an hour (now’s a good time to put on a clay mask as well). Rinse your hair out thoroughly when the time is up.
