Eliminate dry flakes
According to makeup artist Peter Khor, the thing about darker lipstick shades is that they can accentuate any dryness or cracks on the lips. For starters, Khor suggests removing any dry flakes with a lip scrub, then cleaning residue away with a damp tissue, and moisturising with a balm.
For smoother and firmer-looking lips, makeup artist Lolent Lee suggests prepping your pout with Laneige’s Sleeping Lip Mask nightly. “Doing so ensures lip colours look flawless and vibrant the next day,” says Lee.
Do this for fuller lips
Want a plush pout like Kylie Jenner’s? Line the lips with a nude lip liner, going a little over your natural lip line. Then, fill in with the liner to create a base for the lip colour. Add a touch of clear gloss to the Cupid’s bow for extra plumpness when you’re done. No lip fillers needed.
Prevent colour bleed
To prevent your favourite lip colour from bleeding, use a lip primer. We love Urban Decay’s Ultimate Ozone Primer, which not only holds the colour in place, but also subtly plumps up the lips by filling in the lines.
Who says dark lips have to be Goth?
A berry hue can give your look instant glamour. Apply a blusher in a complementary shade, and keep the rest of the face fresh to work the look into a sexy pout.
Keep things neat
If you want well-defined lips when using a dark shade, especially along the edges of your lips, apply the lipstick with a brush for more control and to counter smudging and teeth-staining.
