Fenty Beauty By Rihanna: All The Deets On The Crazy Hot Line

Hey Kylie Jenner, better watch your back. Pop’s baddest princess is coming for your crown

Squadmates of the #RihannaNavy, clear out your cosmetics closet, stat — @badgalriri is batting for your beauty coins with the release of her agonisingly anticipated Fenty Beauty line TODAY (that’ll be 8 September, 2017, if you’re a time traveller from a parallel universe) at some 1,600 Sephora stores across 17 countries, sunny Singapore included.

FYI: We hear that this play for global domination was a directive from the diva herself, as she wanted all her fans to get their paws on the products without having to twiddle their thumbs for eons on end — “skin-stant” gratification that yours truly is grateful for.

Speaking of skin, the Bajan belle is betting on the base to get her line off the ground. The treasure trove of tinted treatments include — deep breath, now — a perfecting primer; 40 (!) shades of what’s been described as a demi-matte fluid foundie; matte and shimmer sticks that (#NoShade) remind me of the Multiples from another beauty behemoth; plus a powder duo for highlighting and contouring, with the last conceivably being able to do double duty as an eyeshadow in a pinch.

Other bits and bobs include a single shade of glorious gloss for the lips; sebum-sopping blotting powders and papers that should sell well in our clammy climate; and a succinct set of five face brushes.

But what to try, what to buy? My personal pick goes to the Shimmer Skinsticks, which for my money are makeup must-haves. “I like to look at these Shimmer Skinsticks like I look at my clothes in the closet. Am I doing fun? Am I doing alien? Am I doing weird? Am I doing sexy? Am I doing extra? Am I doing girl next door? You choose,” says Riri (or one of her aforementioned  alter egos, that is). “The point is, there are so many and they're so fun.”

Indeed, the beautifully buttery formulas are buildable and afford you a wardrobe of nude “dresses” — from the slinkiest and sheerest of “lingerie” to the most opaque and opulent of gowns — to be layered over each other when the occasion calls for it. The portability of this pen also makes this a wand you can wield to create magic that calls for minimal effort with maximum impact — the makeup equivalent of a starlet lip-synching on stage (again, #NoShade).

Editor-endorsed hack: If you’re an adherent of the no-makeup movement, try patting it into bare skin as an instant illuminator — on good skin days, this alone should suffice. Blend along the nose bridge to draw attention to the middle of your face; dot on your cupid’s bow for poutier puckers; and finish with a dab in the middle of your chin.

Then there’s the Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer. Forgive the hand-wringing hyperbole, but this ferociously fierce hybrid lippie in a universally flattering burnished brick-red is pure perfection — especially if you’re a single lady looking for a lad to love. Just take it from the Caribbean chanteuse herself: “I made it because I wanted the girls to get kissed more.” ‘Nuff said, really.

Honourable mention must also go to the “haute” hexagonal packaging rendered in you-know-what pink, which boasts hidden magnets that allow individual items in the collection to click together like Lego blocks — a slick sleight of hand that’s practically begging to be demonstrated to your followers on the ‘Gram.

Having said that, details are still frustratingly few and far between. What we do know are some of the memorable monikers, some of which look poised to become instantly iconic additions to the beauty vernacular — think Chic Freak, Hustla Baby, Fire Crystal, Yacht Life and Trophy Wife — the latter two in particular appearing to be ironic nods to the iconography of Riri’s NSFW #BBHMM and Needed Me music videos.

In any case, be sure to suss ‘em out for yourself at your nearest Sephora store, then grab a copy of the November issue of ELLE Singapore where (spoiler alert) yours truly will provide a down-and-dirty first-person POV of what it’s like to party (and hopefully knock back shots) with Rihanna in NYC. Later!
