Makeup and heat are like oil and water — they just don’t mix. But when we live in a climate where its sweltering hot almost every day of the year, it’s hard to keep makeup looking fresh throughout the day.
Want to keep from looking like you’re melting under the sun? Here are 5 easy tricks to keep your makeup picture-perfect throughout the day.
1. Go easy on the moisturiser
As resident #TuesdaysWithLarry expert Larry Yeo has mentioned, applying excess moisturiser in our climate actually impairs the skin’s natural ability to repair and renew itself. Too much can also make your skin look slick instead of dewy. Apply a moderate amount of a lightweight moisturiser to give your skin the hydration it needs.
2. Use a light hand for foundation and concealer
As much as makeup tutorials on YouTube and Instagram encourage piling on face makeup for flawless skin, it will definitely result in a really cakey facade in this heat. Keep the use of liquid foundations and concealers to a minimum, focusing on areas with blemishes or discolouration where you need the most coverage. For those with oily skin, opt for matte-finish formulas to keep excess shine at bay.
3. Prime, prime, prime
In a warm climate like the one we experience in Singapore, oily lids are a common problem we all face. Keep your eye makeup from moving, melting or smudging by using an eyelid primer beforehand.
4. Look out for 24-hour formulas
Many mascaras and eyeliners that claim to last 24 hours often sound too good to be true, but even if they don’t stay pristine for a full day they’re still made to last through sweat and sebum for a good amount of time. Also, to avoid raccoon eyes at the end of the day, skip pencil eyeliners for longer-lasting gel or liquid liners.
5. Go for tints
Blush, especially powder formulas, do not last long in the heat. Pick up a cheek tint instead — it will lend you a natural flush all day and can even double as a lip stain. What’s better than getting two uses out of one product?
